Rambling Guide to Canada

Having stayed at hundreds of hotels (from budget chains to luxury resorts), I can tell you that most hotel lobbies fail miserably at being interesting. While they may have tasteful decor and just the right amount of seating space, most are filled with neutral colors and boring “art” pieces that do more to fill space than to intrigue guests. Most hotels serve as a base where you have to go out and explore to get a feel for the city’s vibe. Well the team at Hotel Arts, located in the heart of downtown Calgary, AB,  has done the exact opposite. They have embraced art as a way to bring the city to its visitors. In doing so, they have accomplished something unique and incredible.

When you step into the lobby at Hotel Arts, you feel as if you are walking into the entrance of an art gallery. You are immediately presented with a combination of wall art, sculptures, and other decor that gives you a sense that staying in this hotel will be a very different experience from any other hotel. It’s the first hotel I’ve ever visited where I wanted to spend time in the lobby before making my way to my room. I mean with art pieces like this, who wouldn’t want to hang out and take it all in?

Most of the pieces found in the lobby are all produced by artists local to the area. Because of this, browsing their works gives you a unique perspective on the city before you ever step out into its streets.

The art doesn’t stop in the lobby though. As you make your way through the property, nearly every element, from the light fixtures, to the carpeting, is made up of something out of the ordinary.  This creates a space that is both quite luxurious but also very warm and homey. This feeling definitely continues as you enter their very well appointed and newly renovated rooms.

The suites at the Hotel Arts, are quite spacious while also giving you a feeling of spending the evening in an apartment rather than a hotel room.

On top of its incredible beauty and comfort, Hotel Arts also excels with a staff that is attentive and caring. With every staff interaction we were impressed with the genuine concern they displayed as well as how much they all seemed to love being a part of our Calgary experience. The hotel is also pet friendly (with no additional fees) and we found the front desk staff was as just as excited to have Zoe stay with us as they would be for any other guest.  In our experience many “pet friendly” hotels simply tolerate pets, while Hotel Arts did their best to welcome our four legged family with open arms.

If the great staff and lovely accommodations weren’t reason enough to spend your time in Calgary with Hotel Arts, the team has also brought in a team of culinary artists to round out your experience. For breakfast and casual dining, you’ll find the Yellow Door Bistro stands out as a warm and inviting space that also hosts one of the best brunches in Calgary.

If you are looking for some fine dining though, the award winning Raw Bar is definitely the place to be. Serving what they lovingly refer to as Vietmodern cuisine, you’ll find a set of inspired dishes that taste even better than they look!

When looking for a hotel, you normally have to compromise between a location, quality, and amenities. With Hotel Arts that’s absolutely not the case. From their location in the heart of downtown to their wonderful staff, they excel at every element you could look for in a hotel. It’s because of this we happily recommend you choosing Hotel Arts as your next hotel when visiting Calgary. We’ve stayed several times and are already looking forward to our next visit.
